Cat Feeder Dog Proof Options: Keep Dogs Out of Cat Food

Affiliate linksWe earn a commission if you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend. How this works

The short answer

Use a feeder that opens only for your cat's microchip or collar tag: its lid stays shut when the dog comes close. A feeding spot the dog can't reach also works. No brand promises a perfect seal, and Sure Petcare says it can't guarantee every other pet is kept out.

What makes a cat feeder dog proof?

A selective feeder keeps the bowl covered until it reads your cat's chip or tag. Sure Petcare says the SureFeed lid stays closed for unregistered pets. If one pushes in while the lid is open, the manual says the lid closes.

An ordinary timed feeder can't do this. PETLIBRO's Granary, for example, has no pet identification, so anything that reaches the bowl can eat.

Does the dog need a chip or tag too?

For some feeders, yes. PawsPik's Open mode keeps the door open and closes it only when an unassigned pet's chip or tag comes near. That is why PawsPik says every pet should have a tag or chip.

PawsPik's Closed mode avoids this. The door stays shut unless the paired pet approaches.

SureFeed works the same way by default. Sure Petcare says the lid opens only for pets that have been given access.

What if my dog is microchipped too?

Then make sure the feeder never learns the dog's chip. Sure Petcare's manual says to keep all other pets away while it learns your cat. If the wrong pet is learned by mistake, a factory reset clears it.

On the SureFeed, hold the Add Pet button for 10 seconds to reset, then register your cat again. PawsPik pairs each feeder with only one pet, so pair your cat and nothing else.

How do I set it up so the dog can't steal food?

  1. Register only your cat

Keep other pets away while the feeder learns your cat's chip or tag, as Sure Petcare's manual advises.
  2. Shorten the lid delay

If a pet steals food after your cat walks off, Sure Petcare suggests the shortest lid-close setting.
  3. Feed the dog elsewhere during training

Sure Petcare's manual says other pets can reach the food until the later training stages.
  4. Keep the sensors clean

Sure Petcare lists dirty hoop sensors as a reason the feeder stops working.

Can I dog-proof the cat's food without a feeder?

Yes, by giving your cat a space the dog can't enter. International Cat Care advises that each pet has a safe place holding its food and water. It also suggests elevated perches so a cat can move away from a dog.

When pets first meet, International Cat Care suggests separating them with baby gates or doors. A room the cat can reach and the dog can't follows the same idea, with no feeder needed.

No feeder is a guarantee. Sure Petcare's manual says it can't fully guarantee the exclusion of all other pets. ePawDen says its current version can't completely stop other cats trying to reach the food.

Which should you pick?

For a cat on a prescription diet, Sure Petcare says its feeder gives control over prescription diets, medication and weight management. With other cats at home, register only the diet cat on it and give the others a second feeder.

For timed meals as well, pick a hybrid that pairs with one cat. To weigh a covered bowl against a timed hybrid, read SureFeed vs PETLIBRO One RFID.

Questions owners ask

How do I stop my dog eating the cat's food?

Feed the cat somewhere the dog can't reach, or use a feeder that opens only for the cat. International Cat Care advises giving a cat that lives with a dog a safe area holding its food and water, plus high perches where it can get away from the dog. Selective feeders such as Sure Petcare's keep the lid closed for any animal whose microchip or tag isn't registered. Sure Petcare still says it can't guarantee every other pet is kept out.

Is there a selective feeder that works without a collar?

Yes, if your cat has a compatible implanted microchip. Sure Petcare says its SureFeed feeders work with all ID microchips, while ePawDen's and PawsPik's feeders read only ISO FDX-B chips, the 15-digit international standard. Collar-tag feeders such as PETLIBRO's One RFID and Vancpet's RFID feeder can't read implanted chips at all. Check your cat's chip number with your vet before buying, because PawsPik doesn't accept returns for incompatible chips.

How does a microchip cat feeder work?

A microchip feeder keeps its bowl covered and opens the lid only when it reads the ID of a registered pet. Sure Petcare's manual explains that sensors in the hoop detect a pet's head, the reader then checks its implanted microchip or collar tag, and the lid opens for up to 32 stored pets. The lid closes after a short delay once the pet leaves and stays shut for unregistered animals. Sure Petcare's model has no timer; hybrids such as PawsPik's also dispense scheduled meals.
